Visual Designer

Visual Designers are responsible for all aspects of visual storytelling for clients and partners. You’ll work on diverse programs and could be designing anything from brand identities to content, data visualisations to design systems. Your process will be informed by creative strategy, ideative thinking, and a deep curiosity about the people you’re designing for.

The skills they look for in Visual Designers include:

• Visual design: Bringing work to life with a strong visual aesthetic, and a clear understanding of design fundamentals such as typography, colour, shape, and layout. You’re able to articulate design decisions, sharing the thought process behind your work.
• Creative strategy: Defining strategies for how to approach storytelling on projects, with a strong awareness of using insight to inform design decisions. You maintain a view of all brand touchpoints, and are able to bring them together around a consistent story.
• Visual identity: Creating strong visual identities and guidelines which help define brands and their look and feel. You iterate through different concepts and deliver comprehensive outputs based on client needs.
• Prototyping: Identifying new ways to solve problems and critically assess design concepts. You create prototypes at different fidelities and test them with people, using appropriate methods based on the context.
• Interface design: Designing interfaces including websites, apps, and data visualisations – articulating complex interactions and user flows. You create modular components and design systems that are scalable, allowing clients to future proof their experiences.
• Illustration: Illustrating and sketching ideas to support diverse needs across the team, including: photography, storyboarding, concept designs, and finished art. You're comfortable working at a conceptual level and are able to quickly create illustrations to support your teams.
• Information design: Making complex data easy to understand through infographics, visualisations, and reports. You collaborate with data, content, and visual roles, understanding the role this plays in influencing stakeholders.
• Content development: Development of usable content for all client contexts, taking in a holistic view of their brand and content needs. You use your storytelling skills to think beyond the visual and understand how content is used both strategically and across deliverables.

• Bilingual English and Japanese, or fluent in one with some proficiency in the other.
• Located in Tokyo, or able to work remotely from a similar time zone and would consider relocating in future.
• At least 5 years of design experience, ideally in consulting or startup environments.
• Comfortable working with remote, interdisciplinary teams across languages and cultural backgrounds.
• An entrepreneurial, self-starter mindset with exceptional business acumen.

Nice to haves

• Undergraduate degree in Communication Design, Graphic Design, User Interface Design, Art Direction, or a related discipline.
• Experience using Figma, Miro, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
• Additional expertise or interest in Strategic Design, Sustainability, and Engagement.
